Great site, Gary. I dusted off my pc-8201A and hooked it up to my gps using the 'ultra clock' program in your 'File Downloads'. Worked first up!

I have an original NEC PC-8201a `user's guide' I would
part with for $5.00 + postage to USA.

I got a NEC 8201A in near new cond'n. from a junk yard yesterday(no manuals, etc, etc.). There cld. have been a compatable external 5.25inch disk drive in the same area, but the sockets did not look the same as any of those on the back of the NEC. (I also have a well-used working Canon X-07, and a 1/2 dead Sharp PC1500 (stuck in Prog. mode)).
The NEC ran for a short time only on some 1/2 recharged AA alkalines. 28K of spare(avail.) memory. Will look around for a 9V DC plugpack. Will take a better look at yr. web site as time permits. V. impressed w. the NEC keyboard.
I carry around w. me an old Psion XP organiser. Built to last beyond (?) doomsday. Has 9V NiCad battery.

Thanks for the excellent site. I own one NEC PC-8300 and several NEC PC8201As, and I think they're really cool little machines. It's great to have a resource like this to help keep them running to their full potential.

How could I best sell a PC-8201A User's Guide?
Say $15.00 + postage.

Thanks for the nice comments about my site!

Yes, for most of the things people use their Windows laptops for (e.g. word processing) our little NECs and Model 100s blow them out of the water when it comes to cost effectiveness and battery life. I'm glad to hear that yours is still such a useful part of your life.

Gary.

Thankyou fpr running such a great site. I find your information indespensable. I currently have 2 8201's and still use them for such things as typing up letters, doing calculations (using basic) and "sniffing" serial ports for testing. I am also in the process of connecting each 8201 through a Radio Frequency link. I still take it everywhere I go. People with newer laptops snicker when they see it but that smile is wiped right off their faces when I show them the power source (4 x AA), battery life(16-20 hr) and the fact that i am doing the same things they are doing with their laptops for a tenth of the cost of their power guzzling, memory hungry monsters!

Great to see a nice site dedicated to one of the "oldies". My own favourite is the Amstrad NC200 (about 1993) but having said that I can still appreciate someone who is catering for a community however small. Well done and keep going! These old machines need you!

I'm a Model 100 user (or at least I USED to use one a lot, and hope to re-employ mine for some uses). I really appreciate the support for this family of legacy machines, which STILL haven't had their functionality fully replaced in the 21st century YET. With the BASIC emulator from pico, I hope to experiment with my 2 PalmOS devices and see what works. I've seen a couple of the non-Tandy laptops (owned, but didn't really use, an Oli-10 for a while), and appreciate the concept, but never figured out how to run a Dvorak keyboard filter on it. Thanks boodles for access to these valuable legacy files! --Clyde

Returning to work this morning after a three day break. I was surprised to find a leatherette (?) case with a computer thing inside. More surprsingly it still works and I'v now found out others use them as well. Woo Hoo!
All I need now is some double a's or an electrical adaptor.
Oh... and pray it hasn't been cutomised to British Rail specifications.

Thanks for the site... At least I know what the thing is now.

Actually, the M100SIG links do work, but they just take a long time to load. Many of those download areas contain over 100 files and it takes a while to send the entire page to your browser.

I still have, but don't use, an 8201a. I used this from 1984 to early 90's mainly as a terminal to talk to graphics computers I worked on. Also used it to access my email (yes...in 1984!) - this was a dialup to a Vax system - the modem was a 300 Baud acoustic coupler (no telephone plugs in those days!) - had to put it on the hotel bed and try not to fart or cough otherwise you got %%^&%^&Ujyu7 etc.
I even wrote one basic program to convert ethernet Mac addresses to a hex notation. Those were the days!

Great Site! A Model 100/102 Owner from the beginning. I knew quite a few people who had NEC's and loved them too.
These were great machines and I still use my 102 quite often.
Keep up the great work.

Hurrah! The NEC PC8300 is working at last, thanks to Garys' sending me the system ROM binary file by email last week and after a bit of a problem with a duff EPROM. The current time and date have been set (testing the BASIC interpreter in the process) and TEXT has also been put through its paces. It only remains to test TELCOM with the IBM PC, then I will set the machine up to store files on the IBM.

Thanks Gary for your help, you saved the PC8300 from certain death.

Regards

John Bl.

Hi John. There's a good how-to-use online resource for the NEC machines, at the Potent Portables web site. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Campus/7071/tech.html

Also check the other links in my "support resources" area on this web site. Good luck!

Just bought a NEC PC 8291A from the widow of longtime friend, Bob Schhadewald, late, but have no idea how to get started. It turns on when powered by Bob's Norelco multi-output DC adapter, and a nice basic menu comes up, but I need help figuring out how to use the machine, save files and so on. Where do I start, anyone?

I'm happy you've find something useful here, Robert! Thanks for the compliment. If you're looking for memory, keep in mind that if you even could ever find single 8K RAM modules for sale, they'd cost around US$30 to purchase. However, keep an eye on eBay auctions for the NEC PC-8201A, sometimes there are fully loaded systems for sale (with all the extra memory) that end up selling for around $50.
