I still play with it occasionally, but your site has inspired me to try new things. I am amazed that the original internal battery is still holding up after 20 years. It's a great machine. I got a cassette tape from NEC in the States once with the "mon823.co" monitor/debugger program, which I was never able to use. I wonder if anybody needs this program - I still have the tape. Best wishes to all.

I see many NEC computers (and Model 100s for that matter) sell rapidly on that service. Just head to http://www.ebay.com and look into setting up your own account. It's an amazing service as you reach a HUGE audience. Take care, Gary

I got my NEC 8201 in the Fall of 1984, got a 4 penlight battery pack for the nicads, got the SideBoard adaptor (3-64K bank switiching ROM storage) a bit later and have used the machine for as long as 20 hrs on 4 penlight batteries writing books and doing field research in libraries; file transfers off a NULL modem via Telex 1.0 to a PC's HD. I have the 300 baud modem, all the manuals, and still change the batteries to keep the clock alive. I kept the machine out of nostalgia but now I have hope of being able to use it again. I'd particularly like to have a program to do binary transfers via NUL modem without using a casette tape recorder. If you have a mail list, I'd like to sub to it.

Most of the links simply don't work - they prompt to download the file or open in another application. Even though the files are .htm, for some reason the come over as a "type: binary file", and won't be viewed. Again, this site is wonderful. People with newer laptops snicker when they see it but that smile is wiped right off their faces when I show them the power source (4 x AA), battery life(16-20 hr) and the fact that i am doing the same things they are doing with their laptops for a tenth of the cost of their power guzzling, memory hungry monsters!
