I went to school with your son at East Texas State in Commerce (not far from where you got flung out of the hearse). Please tell him hello for me, and I hope he's still playing the bass.

September 20, 2008, 1:00 am, *Demetrios many years later wrote:
It was 1966. Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs were in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to perform at Danceland Ballroom. Fourteen year-olds couldn’t get in to the show without adult supervision, so I snuck into the dress rehearsal. I was determined to hang around and follow the band to the Montrose Hotel.
It was that funky music that made me track down the piper. I was in my own band at the time, and Sam’s shammin’ captured my imagination. My band was called Demetrios and the Gladiators and “Wooly Bully” was at the top of our playlist. If I could just spend a few minutes talking to Sam, maybe I could learn his secret and make it mine.
When he showed up at the hotel I could barely put a sentence together. Here he was, Sam the Sham, standing right in front of me. He looked like Wooly Bully; piercing eyes, mystical, the beard. Was this guy the Devil? Surprisingly, he made it easy to talk with him and never once talking down to me. I was filled with all of the angst of a typical adolescent, rebellious and ashamed of my heritage. Sam encouraged me to be proud of what I was and stay true to my dreams. He invited my family to come to the show that night. It took some coaxing, begging and crying. Finally, my mom agreed to chaperone my brother and me to the show. Talk about “far out.” Even Mom dug the show!
Sam came through town three years later. He remembered me. That was way cool. We talked for a while on his tour bus during a set break. I was ready to quit school and wanted to join his band as a roadie. Sam cracked a big smile. He told me that he didn’t think I’d be very helpful to the world without some education. He insisted that life on the road was not what it seemed. He encouraged me to “feed my head” by reading as much as possible. He promised me that my time would come to travel.
I never saw him again though kept up on his band’s progress and their eventual break-up. Snagged “Hard and Heavy.” That album cover shot of Sam on his Harley did make me want to see the world. After high school came Theological studies at a Greek Orthodox Seminary, a transfer to Boston University’s School of Fine and Applied Arts, acting in off-Broadway theatre and a few films. The road would twist and turn through use and abuse, marriage, parenthood and divorce and marriage again. Along the way came a return to Iowa where my family opened a restaurant. Finally, a career in broadcasting.
I plan to retire soon. I want to write with more regularity. One of my fondest memories is the one of Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Maybe he was just shammin’ me, but his words like parables managed to stick deep in the recess of my mind and heart.
Sam, I don’t know if you remember me. Thank you for passing the flame of Spirit to me. Please know that it is being passed along.
